I'm a writer, editor, and teacher who loves what she does. I’m grateful for the relationships and partnerships I’ve developed with my clients, some of whom I’ve worked with for decades. And I’m always excited to embark on projects with new writers, who never fail to teach me something about this work I love.
I am an editor with twenty-five years of experience. I began my career as an editor for small presses in Chicago and launched my freelance business in 2003. Since then, I've edited a wide range of writings, from nonfiction manuscripts, magazine articles, anthologies, and academic papers to marketing copy, web content, and email newsletters.
I am a working writer and an avid reader. Before I was an editor, I was a writer, and I continue to write articles and ghostwrite books. I have a degree in journalism and English from the University of Georgia. Some of my favorite books are Life after Life by Kate Atkinson, Euphoria by Lily King, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, and Just Kids by Patti Smith,
I am a teacher and mentor. I love working with writers at all stages of their writing life, whether they write for pleasure, write to publish, write for work, or write for school. I teach workshops on editing and revision in Atlanta, Georgia, where I live, and I've been an adjunct faculty member at Lesley University’s low-residency MFA Writing Program, where I taught courses in copyediting and writing a book proposal.
I am a lifelong learner. I seek out opportunities to expand and enrich my skills in editing and writing by attending online courses, workshops, and professional conferences.
I am a part of the editing community. I am a current member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, the Authors Guild, and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.
"Heidi Hill is that rare editor who cares about her clients' projects as if they were her own. She can help you articulate half-formed thoughts, guide you through the process of writing and publishing a nonfiction book, and edit your manuscript to the highest professional standards. She's an excellent communicator and a pleasure to work with."
—Barbara Baig, author of Spellbinding Sentences: A Writer's Guide to Achieving Excellence & Captivating Readers
"I have known Heidi for almost twenty years. She has been professionally involved in the editing of two of my books and is involved in my latest writing project. . . . Heidi has helped me unpack my ideas and experiences. She knows the substance of the material submitted to her and offers clear suggestions as to how to make it more complete, more clear, more inspiring to the reader. . . . Heidi is very personable, interested in the head of the author . . . and the heart which drives the ideas of the head."
—Gary Smith, SJ, author of Radical Compassion and They Come Back Singing
"This class was amazing . . . the material, the structure, the mentorship!"
—T. Pina, Lesley MFA student
