This macro-level edit includes an assessment of the structure, organization, development, voice, and style of your work. I’ll read your manuscript, provide recommendations using the comments function in Word, and outline my feedback in an editorial letter, which you will have an opportunity to review and discuss with me by email, phone, or Zoom.
Sample project: They Come Back Singing: Finding God with the Refugees
This edit focuses on the clarity, consistency, and correctness of your writing. I’ll read your manuscript with an eye toward details such as word choice, redundancies, readability, transitions, and errors of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, following Chicago Manual of Style and your house style guide, if applicable. You’ll receive an editorial letter outlining the work I’ve done and a marked-up manuscript in Word, which you will have an opportunity to discuss with me by email, phone, or Zoom.
Sample project: Our Stories: An Introduction to South Asian America
After your book has been copyedited and designed, I’ll ensure that it is free of typos and formatting errors and ready for publication. You’ll receive a marked-up PDF of your designed book and an hour of follow-up support by email, phone, or Zoom.
Sample project: Sound Bites: Big Ideas in Popular Music
I’ll attempt to verify the facts in your manuscript—including place and people names, dates, sources, citations, and bibliographies—and suggest changes for accuracy and consistency. Before I begin, we’ll have a call to discuss the scope of the work and how you can aid in the fact-checking process (such as by providing sources and annotations). Once I complete the work, I’ll send you a marked-up and annotated Word doc. An optional follow-up call is included in this service.
Sample project: Hidden Mercy: AIDS, Catholics, and the Untold Stories of Compassion in the Face of Fear
If you plan to submit your manuscript to an agent or publisher, I offer three services to help guide you in that process:
Manuscript review: I’ll read your manuscript and provide a comprehensive editorial letter with recommendations for revisions related to structure, organization, voice, and style.
Book proposal review: I’ll provide guidance on developing a book proposal and/or read and provide feedback on your finished proposal, including edits.
Query letter review: I’ll provide guidance on crafting your query letter and/or read and provide feedback on your query letter, including edits.
All consulting services include a follow-up call to discuss questions and next steps.

I have developed workshops of various lengths (two-hour crash courses, six-week courses, and fourteen-week courses), for both online and in-person instruction, on copyediting, self-editing, and revision and the ins and outs of the editorial process. These workshops can be adapted for use with individuals or groups. Contact me to discuss your needs!

My hourly rates for developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking, and consulting are in line with the 2024 Editorial Rates published by Editorial Freelancers Association.
I typically charge per hour, and I will give you an estimate of how many hours the project will take based on your goals for the project, the length of the project, my reading of the manuscript, and a sample edit. I will provide you with an outline of the work to be completed, my rate, and an estimate of hours in a letter of engagement that you will sign off on.
My rates for teaching a class or workshop are based on number of sessions, location (in person or online), and number of participants. Rates range from $25 per person for an hourlong Zoom course to $450 per person for a six-week class that meets for two hours every week.
Use the form below to contact me about your project. I will respond within 48 hours with any follow-up questions, and then we can set up a time to discuss your project and goals in detail, by phone or by Zoom. If, after our conversation, we think we will be able to work together, I will draft a letter of engagement, which will include an outline of the work, a rough timeline, and a rate estimate. If you approve of those details, you will sign off, and the work will begin.
The letter of engagement will include proposed deadlines for us both—when I will submit work to you for your review, and when you will return the work to me. If you have contracted me for editing work, the process typically begins with a sample edit, which gives you a chance to see how I will work on your project. After that stage, I will begin the editing pass we have agreed to (developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, or fact-checking). I will give you updates along the way on my progress and any questions that come up that need immediate attention.
At the end of the editing process, I will send you the marked-up draft with edits and comments, an editorial letter explaining the work I’ve done, and a style sheet noting the terms and editorial style choices that are specific to your project. We will then schedule a final call to go over any remaining questions or concerns. Depending on the length and depth of the project and our schedules, this process could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
